La TRAVIATA
Loved, and Lost --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Violetta Valery is the most famous courtesan in Paris. For her, life is an endless circuit of giddy parties, gambling, champagne and wealthy “admirers.” True love? Please. Until she meets Alfredo Germont, the one man who doesn’t care about her past, and asks only for her heart. What she doesn’t understand is that the world does not forgive so easily. Verdi’s most popular opera carries us into the brilliant world of upper class, 19th century Paris — and into the heart of a woman who must weigh her love against a father’s devotion.
Performances: Friday, February 16; Sunday, February 18; Wednesday, February 21; Saturday, February 24; Friday, March 2; Sunday, March 4. Evening performances begin at 7:30 pm; Sunday matinees at 2 pm.
RIGOLETTO
A Cripple, in Everything but Love --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The handsome, womanizing Duke of Mantua has the perfect foil in Rigoletto, his jester. The man is an ugly hunchback, feared by men and women alike for his vicious tongue. The courtiers hate him, but he amuses the Duke. No one — not even the Duke — knows that Rigoletto is a tender, watchful father who has hidden his young daughter from the corrupt world that is 16th century Mantua. When Rigoletto’s torments provoke an old man’s curse, Verdi’s heartbreaking opera begins to move inexorably to its tragic conclusion.
Performances: Wednesday, February 14; Saturday, February 17; Friday, February 23; Sunday, February 25; Wednesday, February 28; Saturday, March 3. Evening performances begin at 7:30 pm; Sunday matinees at 2 pm.
